Another change at the STLCC-FV campus may be coming, although it won’t be made of steel and glass. It was announced at the launch party of this year’s edition of the Voyageur, Florissant Valley’s literary magazine, that this year might be the last year it will be named Voyageur.
“The title of the magazine, Voyageur, was originally meant to capture the spirit of early life on the prairie. But we feel that the title has grown stale and no longer represents the spirit of Flo Valley,” Ron Ebest said in an email when asked why he wanted to change the name.
The faculty involved wants the new name to represent Florissant Valley, like the Meramec’s Current, Wildwood’s Sycamore and Forest Park’s Forest.
However, in my opinion, Voyageur might still fit the Florissant Valley’s campus. The word voyageur is a French word that means voyager, someone who Domestic Violence Awareness Month travels a long journey. Everyone who attends the Florissant Valley campus is a voyager. Every student, staff and faculty alike are on a voyage.
In addition, Voyageur is still a fitting name is because St. Louis and Florissant have French origins. Florissant in French means flourishing.
But this decision depends on what the campus majority says. So, Reader, how do you feel about the name?
There is a naming contest open until the end of the semester. “If you have an idea for a new name for the magazine, please email it to rebest@stlcc.edu. We will enter your title in the contest. The winner will receive a $30 gift certificate at the bookstore and a blurb in the next issue of the magazine. Everyone is invited to send us a name.”
