The first of what will be a weekly trading card event was held on the third floor of the Instructional Resources building on April 4. 11 students, including myself, showed up to play Magic: The Gathering at “Friday Magic” from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will be hosted at the same time every Friday.
Snacks, including pizza, fruit snacks, chips, and candy were provided to attendees alongside starter kits for the game. According to a library worker, 10 starter boxes were bought to give to students for free, each costing around $20, and many students who stopped to play the game took advantage of the offer. The starter boxes each contained two ready-to-play MTG decks, deck boxes, and instructions so that new-comers could learn the game’s mechanics.
Several games were played across multiple groups of students, set up at tables across the typically quiet library floor. Some arrived knowing each other; others didn’t, but by the end of the two-and-a-half hour period, almost everyone had turned a stranger into a familiar face.
