STLCC’s two-person spring play, “Mass Appeal”, written by Bill C. Davis and directed by Daniel J. Betzler, is set to run Apr. 24 at 11:15 a.m., Apr. 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m., and Apr. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Terry M. Fischer Theatre on campus. “Mass Appeal” follows Father Tim Farley, a beloved local priest who keeps both his churchgoers and his wallet comfortable with non-confrontational sermons. His comfortable world is jeopardized after he is forced to take in the young, brash, and idealistic seminarian Mark Dolson who challenges Father Farley’s every word. Both men must learn from each other the proper give and take of the church on the opposite ends of their extreme positions or risk losing their faith all together. Entry is free, and the play will be interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The art department held a poster design competition for the production with students from Graphic Design II, proctored by Professor Stuart, and students from Graphic Design III and IV, proctored by Professor Courtois, submitting poster designs for one to be selected by the “Mass Appeal” team. After much deliberation, the team settled on two poster designs. One, submitted by me, from Graphic Design II, and another submitted by student Lucia Colli from Graphic Design III. Both posters will be used to promote the play throughout campus and on social media.
I know many will assume a play about two men arguing about church is bound to be boring, but if you find your curiosity piqued at ethical dilemmas and unlikely friendships, “Mass Appeal” may be the perfect play for you.
