More than 40 people attended The Forum’s 50th-anniversary celebration on Nov. 29 in The Forum Office, Room 223 of the Student Center. St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley’s student newspaper has trained journalists and informed readers for 50 years. Founded in 1973, the paper has provided news, opinions, features, and entertainment to the campus
and community for half a century.

Vienna I. Austin, student editor, said she is proud to support the paper’s mission: to inform, educate, and entertain STLCC-Florissant Valley’s campus. “Looking back on the hundreds of students who have filled the staff of The Forum in these past 50 years, the work they’ve done, and the work our current staff is doing to continue the legacy of this paper really reminds me of how vital a free, student- based press is to the life of a campus,” Austin said. “I can’t wait to see where our efforts to revitalize The Forum takes us and where the paper is in another 50 years.”

Staff Writer Stephanie Licklider joined the staff this semester and believes in the power of journalism to help tell the story of students who go to school here. Her first article appeared in the November issue regarding Bruce Lee, someone who has had an impact on her life. She is looking forward to contributing more stories next semester.

Mary Horner, faculty adviser, believes The Forum and journalism are important. “We are proud to provide a source of information for the STLCC-Florissant Valley campus and an outlet for students to express their opinions and report on campus events. We look forward to the next 50 years of continuing that tradition,” she said.
